Moroccan Meatballs

When one of us visited Morocco on business we discovered Moroccan meatballs. They were so delicious that we spent a lot of time trying to find a recipe that was near to replicating them. This recipe is about as close as we’ve ever managed. It makes about 30 small meatballs which, left to our own devices, we would probably devour between two of us but, in reality, that should be enough to serve at least 6 people! Serve with sweet cherry tomatoes (from the garden if you can), quick pickled onions (just slice some red onions and leave them to soak in white wine vinegar for half an hour) and home made mayonnaise (recipe coming soon).

Ingredients

  • 500 g Beef Mince
  • 1 small Red Onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic finely grated
  • 1 slice Bread toasted and soaked in water
  • tsp Ras El Hanout
  • ½ tsp Ground Ginger
  • ½ tsp Cayenne Pepper more if you like it hot and spicy
  • 1 tbsp Coriander finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp Olive Oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Squeeze the water out of the bread and place in a large mixing bowl. Add the meat, onion and all of the other ingredients with the exception of the oil and mix well. Season with salt and pepper and mix again
  • Using wet hands, divide the mixture into small meatballs. They should be slightly larger than a marble but not as big as a golf ball. Put the meatballs on a tray and put in the fridge for 30 minutes
  • Heat a large frying pan over a medium heat. Drizzle the meatballs with the olive oil and fry in the frying pan for about 10 minutes, turning regularly to ensure they are cooked through and slightly charred
  • Serve in pitta bread pockets with cherry tomatoes and pickled red onion. Enjoy!
